CLEAN ENERGY WIN – Researchers from Penn State University have used machine learning to draw a connection between the seismic energy produced by microearthquakes and subsurface rock permeability that can boost how efficiently we extract geothermal energy from beneath the ground!Microearthquakes are low-intensity tremors that frequently occur in deep underground geothermal reservoirs and create tiny bursts of energy rarely felt on the surface. According to new research funded by EERE’s Geothermal Technologies Office, geothermal developers could use these microearthquake measurements to target rock areas with increased permeability, allowing fluids to flow among the hot rocks and be drawn to the surface to produce more geothermal energy. More permeability = more energy extraction, offering major potential for clean, firm, and flexible electricity generation! As we prepare the clean energy workforce of tomorrow, we need to make sure that workforce looks like America. EERE is committed to creating job opportunities and expanding workforce training so that all Americans can access the many benefits of the clean energy transition, including good-paying jobs. Take this recent gathering of Clean Energy Champions, all from various levels of our federal government. When Dr. Sunita Satyapal (second from right), the director of EERE’s Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) and of the Hydrogen Interagency Taskforce, met Ebby Brennan (far left), an MIT grad with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering who worked with a team of MIT students to build a scooter powered by clean hydrogen, she knew that Brennan was a perfect candidate for an EERE fellowship. Thanks to recruitment efforts from HFTO technology manager, Christine Watson, Brennan now works on HFTO program manager Jesse Adams’ team to help the office in its mission to overcome the technological, economic, and institutional barriers to the development of hydrogen and fuel cells. Working with EERE is one of many ways you can advance our clean energy future and further your energy career. And an unexpected perk is potentially running into our nation’s energy leaders like Dr. Geri Richmond (far right), Undersecretary for Science and Innovation at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and Dr. Arati Prabhakar (second from left), Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) extends a warm welcome to the latest round of cohorts in the Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program (LEEP). Thirty-three new LEEP fellows will be embedded across four U.S. national laboratories, where they will develop next-generation technologies with the support of an extensive network of mentors and experts. Since the program's inception in 2015, 153 LEEP startups have attracted $2.73 billion in follow-on funding and created over 2,343 jobs. These clean energy champions have developed breakthrough technologies spanning American industries—and have launched successful U.S. manufacturing companies—that will help accelerate the nation’s clean energy future while creating good-paying jobs.Read more about their upcoming projects here:https://lnkd.in/gzpEjkEm#EnergyProfessionals #Entrepreneurs #Innovation

According to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Berkeley Lab, communities within 20 miles of operational wind projects see an increase in employment rates and income. LBNL recently released a study investigating how wind energy development positively impacts employmentfor black workers, men, and a range of skilled workers, as well as increaseswage rates in the surrounding communities. This is good news for the equity impacts of wind energy!✨Interested in learning more?
